Taking A Stand Against Racism

2013-04-29 15:34:00

The YWCA of Cass-Clay partnered with more than 75 local organizations and businesses, including Warner and Company, to host educational events throughout April 26th advocating against racism.  This was Warner's forth year participating in the National Stand Against Racism day.

The widespread community events started at 9 a.m. when children at A Child's World day care in Fargo created a Harlem Shake video and discussed diversity.  Eastwood Elementary third-graders in West Fargo also discussed diversity that morning.

Then, Cheney Middle School sixth-graders discussed stereotypes, prejudices and bullying with Denise & Jessica Magness. Sixth-grade language teacher Susan Klabunde said that an area of growing diversity like Fargo, people need to be reminded that even though we're different, we're very much the same.  "I think it's an issue we need to continue to talk about with these kids," Klabunde said.  The students closed the event by creating a video that will be posted on YouTube, Klabunde said.  They also signed posters declaring they, too, will stand against racism.

“I’m always shocked at the honest experiences our youth tell about their own encounters with racism, sexism or ageism. They are actively working to make things better. Makes me hopeful their open mindedness to our differences will rub off on their parents and grandparents.” says Jessica Magness
